The Culprits for Snoring

If there are over 300 anti-snoring devise that were invented in America alone, they must have worked somewhere. Yet the unfortunate truth is that snoring is actually an uncontrollable condition. If they worked for some sufferers, they must have kept the person awake all night as to prevent him from making his noise.

Snoring is disturbing. It will either keep you awake and sleepless or the person beside you. It normally occurs when the passage of air is obstructed at back of the nose and the mouth. Snoring occurs in the area where the upper throat and the tongue meet with the uvula and the soft palate as they strike and vibrate when breathing.

Snoring, like all other conditions has to start somewhere. The following are pointed to be the causes of snoring:

· Poor muscle tone of the throat and the tongue. Usually, people who drink or take drugs relax too deeply when sleeping. This will also cause the muscles in the mouth area to relax. The tongue will then slip downwards to the airway or the throat may be drawn towards the passage of the airway.

· Too large throat tissue. There are reasons to the bulkiness of the throat tissue. Children snore because of adenoids and tonsils. While adults typically experience snoring when they have tumors or cysts (aside from normal conditions). Obese individuals also have the likelihood to snore since they have larger neck tissues.

· Soft palates and long uvula. The opening of the airway meets somewhere in the location nearest to the palate or the uvula. Once this section of the neck is obstructed, the tendency would be that the passageway of air is hampered.

· Obstruction in the nasal air passage. Stuffy and blocked nasal passage will require additional effort before anything may go in, including air.

· Deformities of the nose. Birth-related and formation-related nose problems may also hamper the passage of the air into the nose. To cure this problem, rhinoplasty may be made by means of widening the expanse of the nostril or by fixing the division of the nose.

Whichever way you look at it, snoring seems to be a very serious problem. It does not bring complications or cause the development of other serious illnesses but it may affect one's sleep pattern and other people's outlook towards the person. However, long-term serious snoring can cause obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition for which the body is obstructed from both normal sleeping pattern and breathing. It totally obstructs breathing and may last for 10 seconds for each episode at around seven to ten times in an hour. Patients may experience somewhere from 30 to 300 episodes in a complete sleep cycle. Not only will this condition be very obstructive in the normal sleep pattern, it may also cause the heart to pump hard due to reduced blood oxygen supply.

Snoring usually occurs when the person sleeps on his back but there are cases when the person snores at every angle of sleep position. These are what we pertain to as heavy snorers. This is quite disruptive and needs immediate medical help to assure that sleep apnea is not the problem and stop it from becoming the problem. The help can be best rendered by a qualified otolaryngologist who will perform a test on how serious the condition is.
